X-mas just 24 days away

It seems like the big pig-massacre-day is slowly cloosing in. That, however, is a strictly human perspective. For the pig-community in general and the individual pig its cloosing in much too fast. Soon almost the entire pig population is going to be exterminated and for the few survivors this means that almost every one they know will be dead. Being born a piglet is indeed a nasty business and a cruel fate.

To come to terms with these misdeads the Garden Gnome Community has decided to do something about this horrible event. The most effective remedy according to the chief analyst of the Garden Gnome Special Task Force (GGTF) would be to individualize as many pigs as possible. This will rend it impossible to avoid questions like: "- Isn't that Henry III Swineroof we are eating now?" from your concerned children...

Today's PIG is named Marcelo Puffin and has served his master gnome well for a little more than a decade. "- He is a good companion and he does not easily get into stressful behaviour!" the Mahtoob Gnome says with affection in his voice. "Marcelo only gets excited about truffles, then he can be a little bit carried away out of focus... and into some kind of obsessive condition... But what do you know? This is a pig with a personality after all!"

Change of Government in Mongolia

It appears as the former Premier Minister of Mongolia had to retire for reasons of bad health. He had to attend medical health care in South Korea as well as China, but could not be cured enough to maintain his office. His diagnose was hepatitis C, which is incurable and his health status was not showing any improvement, so he apparently felt he had to step down.

He was replaced the Foreign Minister, Sukhbaatariin Batbold, from late October on. Batbold then appointed Ravdan Bold as new Foreign Minister. The Mongolian Ikh Khural consented to the appointment with a solid majority vote. Foreign Minister Bold has formerly been director for the General Intelligence Agency from 2008 until the present and before that he was Ambassador to the United States, between 2003 and 2007.

Premier Minister Batbold is the 26th Premier Minister of Mongolia to this date. He is heading a coalition government consisting of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) and the Mongolian National Democratic Party (MNDP).

This means that as a consequence of the Presidential Election this summer and the election of Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj (MNDP) as new President, that the whole front of Mongolian government has changed in just a couple of months.

The new Premier Minister explained his position on November 10 and said: “No change in the structure of the government.” This statement was probably as much for the public as reassurance inwards towards the coalition partners in MNDP.

Furthermore, the Russian Federation has appointed a new extraordinary and plenipotentiary Ambassador Viktor Samoylenko, to the Mongolian Republic, replacing Boris Govorin in office.

Turning to more of everyday politics away from the fancy halls of Government Building in central UB, you should not think that nothing is happening concerning ordinary people these days. Far from it, as since early November the government has declared a curfew from 21 hours, which means that all bars, restaurants and clubs should be closed by that time. This is actions oriented against the spread of the swine flu. The Mongolian people obviously fears the consequenses of his decease, and consquently the Government take action to calm the public. But aren'rt they overdoing it? Just a little bit? It is reported that hotels are raided and the police break into rooms where there is a party going on during the curfew. And the perpetraitors are arrested and held in polce custody.

Mongolians seems to have som grounds for their fears of the swinw flu, as the decease so far has killed 18 people in Mongolia. The government has responded and is reported to have done some shopping abroad, buying respirator equipment for the Mongolian health care system. The death rate seems a little bit higher than in Sweden so far, as here 15 people have died cause of the swine flu. Sweden has 9 million people compared to Mongolia’s 2.7 million. The swine flu spreads and terrifies around the globe…

Missunnsamhetens folk

Dagens bild anspelar på talesättet att sätta sig på höga hästar, vilket kan leda till avund eller missunnsamhet. Jag hade emellertid tänkt att ge begreppet missunnsamhet en lite annorlunda framtoning i det här inlägget.

En del människor är ju genuint snåla och motsatsen till generösa. Blotta tanken på att någon skulle kunna åka tunnelbana eller buss gratis får dem att må fysiskt illa. Överhuvudtaget är ord som gratis, solidaritet, medborgarlön och medmänsklig empati begrepp som är obegripliga för denna kategori humanoider.

Istället hänger man sig åt olika typer av nyttokalkyler, som man ofta beräknar illa underbyggda och med sorglig okunskap om hur omänsklig och barbarisk en sådan ideologi kan bli. Harald Ofstad, norsk filosof berättade en gång den sedelärande historien om X som bodde i ett litet lokalsamhälle där tvål var en bristvara. Alla de andra människorna i lokalsamhället hatade X. För att öka sin gemensamma nytta och därmed förbundna känslor av välbefinnande slår de helt enkelt ihjäl X och gör tvål av honom. Nu är alla lyckligare än de var medan X ännu levde. Den totala nytto/lyckonivån har höjts. Men vad hände egentligen med X? Enligt den ovan konsekvensutilitaristiska filosofin var handlingen korrekt och oklanderlig eftersom konsekvenserna föredrogs av flertalet. Men X:s rättigheter kränktes onekligen. Enligt ett rättviseutilitaristiskt resonemang så var handlingen felaktig eftersom den kränkte X rättigheter.

Många människor i dagens samhälle begriper inte den här skillnaden, utan tror fullt och fast att det är ett infantilt nyttoresonemang som gäller. Men vad leder det till för typ av samhälle? Tror ni att Jimmy Åkesson eller hans partikollegor tänkt i de här banorna?

Nu tänkte jag inte uppehålla mig vid den politik som Sverigedemokraterna driver, utan mer fokusera på vad mer etablerade partier har för sig. Dessa partier tar delar av SD:s politik och gör den till sin egen för att inte förlora röster till SD. Det de inte verkar tänka på med denna handling är att de faktiskt legitimerar och normaliserar SD:s politik. De gör med andra ord SD rumsrena och mer oantastliga i det offentliga rummet. Vi kan se paralleller till den här utvecklingen i en rad europeiska länder.

Det avgörande verkar vara att motsatsen; att tiga ihjäl SD inte heller fungerar. Det rättfärdigar emellertid inte handlingen att integrerar deras politik bara för att få röster. Grundproblemet tycks ligga i upphöjandet av missunnsamheten till en socialt acceptabel norm. Göran Hägglund talade om ’verklighetens folk’, men frågan är om inte ’missunnsamhetens folk’ utgör ett större problem än den kulturelit som Hägglund verkar avsky. För vilka är missunnsamhetens folk?

De mår illa när någon får något ’gratis’, i form av socialbidrag, sjukpenning, eller arbetslöshetsersättning. De mår illa när någon efter att någon ska friges efter tre decennier i fängelse och de ser ingen nytta med det. De mår illa då någon kan gå gratis på museum, eller åtnjuta subventionerad eller gratis tåg- eller bussresa. De mår illa då ulandsbistånd betalas ut utan att man får något tillbaka. De mår illa när flyktingbarn flyttar in i en byggnad i grannskapet, eftersom det drar ner priserna på deras egna bostäder… Vi skulle kunna hålla på länge med denna uppräkning, men jag ska sluta här och istället gå över till den dygd som missunnsamhetens folk hyllar förutom missunnsamhet; girigheten. Girighet och driften att ständigt berika sig själv är inget konstigt och inte något lyte enligt detta synsätt. Trots att det hette i gamla tiders religion, att det var en dödssynd. Nej det är det fundament som samhället ska byggas på…

Jag vet inte mycket om hur framtiden kommer att gestalta sig, men om vi låter missunnsamhetens folk bestämma då blir det inte trevligt…

Memories of Itza

I've been looking through old photos and came across this one from July 2002 as me and my Mexican friend Mario Andrade tried to reach the peak of Itzachihuatl (5260 m) outside Mexico City. It's a thrilling photo as my body is covered by at least 5 kilos of ice as we went into a snowstorm. We never reached the top as Mario, who was the expert, or 'el alpinista' as he said, considered the wheather to be too bad. But I got up over 5000 m and that was good enough for me. A 'gamberro' I was Mario said; somebody visiting the mountain. The on our way downhill we ran into a cow, 'safely' grazing at 3200 m. Gets you into perspective, doesn't it?

However, I also met a big gray rat on the top of the Gunung Kinabalu (4100 m) on the island of Borneo. It turned out to be the very special Kinabalu rat, only living above 2700 m, feeding on tourists.
